South Sydney hammers Sydney Roosters 42-10

The South Sydney Rabbitohs gave an emphatic display of their premiership credentials on Sunday with a 42-10 thrashing of the Sydney Roosters, but they will have to wait for scans to determine the cost after key injuries to half-back Adam Reynolds and second-rower John Sutton.

The Rabbitohs were looking forward to the return of Sam Burgess, whose last game for the cardinal and myrtle came in the 2014 grand final, where he famously played on with a broken cheekbone as Souths ended a 43-year wait for a premiership title.

But although the English star had a solid first hit-out, he was far from the expected headline act as his side took apart the opposition.

Last season injuries and poor form took their toll as the defending champion Rabbitohs finished seventh before being knocked out in week one of the finals by Cronulla.

The poor finish may have proven a blessing in disguise, however, as Souths' early exit, coupled with the lack of big international commitments meant their key players had an almost perfect run at a preseason.
