11 Years since the mighty Hawks were so low

Not since 2006 in only Alastair Clarkson’s second season at the helm has the might of Hawthorn been $51.00 or more to win the flag! And the worst is yet to come facing a rampant West Coast in Round 5 this weekend and an unheard of 0 & 5 start to 2017!

After their state-of-the-art move to Waverley Park from the old Glenferrie base, Hawthorn showed promise in 2006 adopting a new-look “Buddy’s Box” forward system. The Hawks won four of their first five, but then collapsed to lose 12 of their next 13 before a minor recovery to finish the season in 11th place!

But from their it was all up! Clarkson got a new two-year deal; a massive partnership deal with the Tasman government set the Hawks on a lucrative financial pathway, and in 2007 they finished 5th after the H & A season, eventually falling at the semi-final stage to North Melbourne!

A $3.6 million profit was announced, a new batch of young guns arrived, and on the back of what became known as “Clarkson’s Cluster,” Hawthorn powered on to shock Geelong in the 2008 Grand Final!

In nine seasons since – headlined by the champion three-peat in 2013-15, the Hawks have been at the top or near enough to in flag betting. But not any more!

After the 2nd half collapses (both by a staggering 86 points) against Gold Coast & Geelong yesterday, another towelling from the Eagles will have Hawthorn winless after five rounds & as much as $67.00 or even $81.00 at in flag betting – simply unheard of!

And few if any would be confident they’ll beat rising St Kilda the following Sat (Apr 29)!

Hawthorn opened a $3.05 outsider at last night against West Coast ($1.38); while their premiership price has ballooned from $13.00 to $51.00; & incredibly are now $21.00 just to Make the Top Four!

They’re right back with Collingwood, & only the struggling Nth Melbourne, Gold Coast, Carlton & Brisbane Lions behind them.

Fellow 0 & 4 clubs Sydney are quoted at $21.00 in flag betting; while the hapless Kangaroos are now a despised $151.00!
