West Coast’s $4 million bid to retain free agent Jeremy McGovern gets AFL great’s backing

WEST Coast’s reportedly lucrative $4 million bid to retain dual All-Australian defender Jeremy McGovern has received the backing of AFL great Garry Lyon.

The Eagles have a pair of high profile free agents to recontract this season, with both McGovern and Andrew Gaff likely to draw significant rival interest.
However, Fairfax reports West Coast has made an early move in order to keep McGovern at the club, offering him a long-term contract worth $4 million over five years.
The 25-year-old, who is a two-time All-Australian, led the competition for contested marks last season and is widely regarded as one of the league’s best intercept defenders.
Yet, according to Lyon, it’s his ability to also push forward and impact on the scoreboard that makes him worth the lucrative $800,000-per-year contract West Coast has tabled to him.
“He’s an influential player,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.
“When you’re going to spend that sort of money, you want someone that influences results and I think he’s able to do that.
“He’s a marking machine in the back half and he can go forward and kick goals.
“It gets back to this multidimensional player that you need to be, if you’re going to earn that sort of money.”
