WHAT IS THE AFLX?
The AFLX is the league’s newest format.
It’s hoped that the high-paced game attracts a new type of audience to footy matches around the country, given it’s expected to be much different to your routine AFL match.
The games will be significantly shortened, the rules will be different and it’s hoped the format will be suited to the league’s most skilled and exciting players.
Ultimately, the AFL is hopeful that this is the format of the game it can eventually take overseas.
THE RULES
— Played on a field the size of a soccer oval.
— Seven players on the field per team, three players on the bench per team.
— Two players from each team must start in each 40m arc, three in the middle.
— A 20-second limit on shots for goal.
— Made up of two 10-minute halves.
— Played with a silver football.
— Two 40m arcs at either end of the field.
— Goals from outside 40m are known as ‘Zooper Goals’ and are worth 10 points.
— Last touch out of bounds.
— Kick-ins from behind the goal line after all scores.
— Free shot at goal from 40m arc for deliberate rushed behinds.
— No marks paid for backward kicks, except inside the attacking 40m arc.
— Each team plays two games, plus a third if they qualify for the final.
