Alexander Zverev was delighted to have started his bid for a second ATP Finals title

Defending champion Alexander Zverev was delighted to have started his bid for a second ATP Finals title with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Rafael Nadal at the O2 Arena.

Zverev has endured a difficult year since triumphing in London at the end of the 2018 campaign, with his lone title in 2019 coming at the Geneva Open in May.

This means so much, playing here again after winning my biggest title so far in my career here last year.

A quarter-final at the French Open was his best Grand Slam showing and Zverev is hoping that can end a disappointing few months on a high note.
He said after claiming his first win over Nadal in six attempts: "It is obviously great. Everyone knows how much I have struggled the whole season.
"This means so much, playing here again after winning my biggest title so far in my career here last year. This means everything to me."
Nadal, meanwhile, dismissed talk of an abdominal injury having hampered him, admitting: "No complaint about the physical condition, no pain. That's the only positive thing.
"The physical issue was not an excuse at all. The only excuse is I was not good enough. I stay positive and I stay competitive, something that today I was not."

Earlier in the day, Stefanos Tsitsipas had also broken a lengthy losing streak as he defeated Daniil Medvedev 7-6 6-4 to end a run of five straight defeats to the US Open runner-up.
